Project description

Subproject P1 is responsible for the central processing and provision of patient data and biospecimens for the OUTLIVE-CRC consortium. The main goal is to establish a cohort of colorectal cancer patients that will be available to all project partners as a basis for research. The focus of OUTLIVE-CRC is on the recruitment of young colorectal cancer patients who have already completed curative primary treatment.

Based on the strategy for a common data and biosample handling of the OUTLIVE-CRC consortium, a broad consent and data protection concept will be (further) developed for the recruitment of colorectal cancer patients. The cohort will also be established in collaboration with the PEARL consortium (Prof. Brenner, Heidelberg, Germany), which focuses on primary and secondary prevention. For tertiary prevention, these patients will be asked to join the OUTLIVE CRC consortium. Additional patients will be recruited through collaborations with colorectal cancer centers and cancer registries.

All collected patient data, data from quality of life questionnaires (EORTC, once per year, online or app-based) and data from the cancer registry (relapse and death) will be documented in the study and biobank management system "CentraXX". Furthermore, a follow-up is being developed, through which a re-contact of the patients by the treating physicians is possible, e.g. in case of a relapse.

For the consortium-wide biobanking, the already existing state-of-the-art biobanking infrastructure of the ICB-L will be used. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sample collection, processing, storage and logistics as well as standardized sample documentation will be adapted for OUTLIVE-CRC. Required samples for analytical procedures in each subproject will be distributed while maintaining an unbroken cold chain. Additional biosamples will be collected and made available through already established collaborations (Rostock, Hamburg, Kiel).

Subproject P1 is jointly organized by ISE and ICB-L and reflects the central infrastructure of the OUTLIVE-CRC consortium. By providing patient data and biospecimens, research questions in the context of improving prognosis and quality of life of young colorectal cancer patients can be addressed by the individual subprojects.
